Sanitary Holding Tanks in an RV and Use of Chemical Cleansers
An ideal RV or Motorhome would contain at least 2 tanks wherein the waste material is stored. This waste comes from the washroom and from the kitchen area. These tanks need to be first drained empty and then cleaned via the aid of certain chemicals. These chemicals not only clean the tanks but also remove the foul odor emitting from within its confines.
The question regarding the cleaning of these tanks using chemicals has often been a critical one. Some are of the opinion that chemicals should not be used as they are harsh on the skin and also emit fumes that may be damaging to the health of individuals near the cleaning site.
While RV’s and Motorhomes are equipped with flush based cleansers for their septic tanks, when a tank has not been cleansed for the entire season, the need for using chemicals becomes obvious.
Chemicals such as bronopol, formaldehyde and quaternary ammonium chloride have been stopped from being used in various RV dumps across the United States. Other less harsh chemicals are however permitted to be used.
The Dump Basics:
An RV dumping site is a place which allows the septic tanks/ holding tank/ black tank located inside your RV or Motorhome to be emptied. Basically, it allows all the waste material to travel from inside your Motorhome to a sanctioned waste treatment plant. Basically what you discharge is wastewater.
How to Empty Your Waste from your RV to an RV Dumping Site?
There is a simple 6 step process that you need to follow in order to empty your black tank into an authorized RV dump site. Here are the steps that you need to follow:
Step # 1: Close the Dump’s valve and attach the drain’s outlet with the hose pipe used for draining liquid waste matter. The sewer adapter too needs to be fixed to the drain’s outlet. In case the inlet or lines have slight spaces, opt for the hose being pushed deep inside and secured via additional adapters.
Step # 2: You need to first empty the tank containing toilet waste water. Make sure that the outlet pipe is placed in a gradual sloping fashion. Thereafter, pull the large knob located on the Black Tank with a hard tug. This creates the desired momentum to dispatch the waste water forcefully.
Step # 3: Allow the tank to drain itself completely. Put a bucket of water into the Black Tank to flush out solid waste matter and then shut the valve after the water stops coming. Thereafter, some water should be added at the bottom of the tank to further loosen solid waste matter.
Step # 4: You also have the option of using the sewer hooking mechanism. When using this system to empty the Black Tank, keep the dump valve closed. Open only when the tank is full. This is done so as to provide the extra push when needed to clear the waste matter by helping it get sucked within the sewer hook-up at the sani dump station.
Step # 5: To empty the kitchen waste tank, simply attach the drain hose to the drain outlet. Secure it using adapters specifically designed for RV sewer waste disposal. Make sure the lines and inlets are secure and do not have gaps. Thereafter, simply pull open the smaller valve to empty the kitchen waste.
Word of Caution: It is suggested that you flush the waste two to three times using water, to ensure that everything is flushed clean. Experts also suggest that you need to clean one tank at a time. So, first empty the Black Tank holding toilet waste and then, the Grey Tank holding kitchen waste material.
When Should You Dump RV Waste Tanks?
Emptying your septic tanks or waste tanks is a sensible option and a mandatory one, least you wish to fall sick. Nonetheless, these tanks are made to hold a lot of waste matter. You need to at least let it fill till the brim and then empty it.
If you are over-hygienic then, you might want to allow only one fourth space to remain free before dumping the remainder three fourth waste matter. When your RV is parked at a site, the valve of the waste tank holding your toilet waste needs to be secured shut.
If you leave it open, the solid waste matter tends to become rock hard and stays at the bottom. In case this happens, you would have to use a myriad of chemical cleansing agents to remove it and make your tank hygienic again.

A single waste tank needs to be deposited into your home dump site in a seven day period – no more. If you wish to empty another tank, do so on the 8th day. This is because decomposition of waste is a natural process that takes a week to complete.
It is recommended that you avoid putting excess deodorizers into your septic tank as it kills the bacteria that naturally decompose your waste material.
List of Chemicals to Avoid Using in RV Waste Tanks:
Your RV holding tank is susceptible to damage if you use harsh chemicals. You should avoid using bronopol, formaldehyde, para-dichlorobenzene, dowicil, paraformaldehyde and glutaraldehyde.
In case you are using deodorants and cleaners that you usually use at home to clean your RV holding tanks then, refrain from doing so. Use only those that are specific to RV and Motorhomes.
How to Clean Your RV Toilet Tank?
Yes, it is very important to clean your toilet waste in your RV. For this, you simply need to try and flush the toilet normally (maybe twice) and close the dump valve before releasing it with a slight jerk. This shall release the waste matter and flush it out of the tank.
Open the tank and wash it with water. The waste matter shall slide to the ground and be absorbed by the soil. After this, you may want to disinfect this tank. For this very purpose, you simply need to pour disinfectant liquid (used for household cleaning purposes) into the tank and fill it with water. Thereafter, throw in dozens of ice cubes.
After doing so, go for a drive. After about two to three hours, the ice cubes shall scrape the tank and you may dump this waste water in a dump site. You may want to keep your poo tank clean by flushing it with water on a regular basis. No need to put cleaning liquids into the tank often. Do so when the tank needs a total cleanse.
How to Use an RV Dump Site Efficiently?
1) Gain Knowledge: First and foremost, you need to gain adequate knowledge on how the waste from both the black and the grey tank needs to be emptied. This can be done by researching the internet and watching a couple of instructional videos.
Then, seek advice from the RV user manual. Understand how your Motorhome’s sanitation tanks function. Accordingly empty the tanks in a sani dump site. Every RV has a different mechanism for emptying waste tanks. Never confuse it as a generic process.
2) Hoses and Cleaning Pipes need to be New: Make sure that while cleaning the tanks, your hoses and cleaning pipes are devoid of any wear and tear. They should be in good working condition and ensure that the adapters are in place.
3) Use Proper Connectors: Make sure that you have separate tubes for cleaning the Grey Tank, the Black Tank and the Poop Tank. Connectors need to be separate and the poo tank needs to be cleaned away from an RV dump site (preferably in a wasteland).
4) Wear Protective Equipment: Make sure that you are using adequate protection while cleaning your RV tanks. Wearing protective clothing that covers your entire body may be a good option. Covering your hands with gloves is recommended. This would avoid you from getting dirty in the act.
5) Pipes Need to Be Fitted Well: You would need to pay attention while attaching the drain pipe to your tank’s outlet. The direction of your drain pipe needs to be sloping towards the dump site and not parallel to it. The gentle slope shall encourage the waste to travel smoothly without clogging your hose.
6) Clean with Water: After you have drained the initial waste water from your tanks, you need to re-flush the tank using a few buckets of fresh water. This helps get rid of waste that has accumulated onto the tank’s floor. It also ensures that your pipe does not get blocked.
