What are Battery Refurbishing Companies?
The art of bringing an unhealthy battery back to its optimal health is termed as battery reconditioning. Basically, a battery loses power when its charging capacity is vastly compromised. It also malfunctions when its electrolyte level is compromised.
In simpler words, when your car’s battery suffers from stratification, it tends to malfunction. Its charging capacity is vastly compromised. The lack of optimal charge and discharge slowly and steadily destroys its working mechanism.
What do Battery Refurbishing Companies Do?
Battery refurbishing companies remove the sulfur deposits from the battery. When these deposits are removed, your battery automatically begins to function like new.
So, these refurbishing companies help you cut down the cost of buying a new battery each time an old one starts to die. Moreover, you can perform this refurbishing process three to four times without the need for a new purchase (battery).
Nonetheless, these companies do charge for their services. So, you may have to shell out a few hundred dollars each time you opt for their services. This is still less than spending $4000 (on an average) for a battery replacement.
Another option is to refurbish your lead-acid battery or lithium-ion battery at home.
What Equipment do You Need for Running Battery Refurbishing Business?
Battery refurbishing business is not as simple as it sounds. Nonetheless, if performed correctly, it is not that tough either. Besides the skill level, you need equipment that makes your task easier.
Here is a list of what all you need:
Multi-Head Screwdrivers:
You need to have a couple of screwdrivers. These need to be of various shapes and sizes. I mean, you should have a multi head screw driver that enables you to open and close any kind of screw. Flat head variant is a must-have in the kitty.
Tools to Clean the Battery:
These include gels and liquid that is readily available in the market. It is meant specifically for cleaning the battery terminals and surface. You should also include dry cloth, sponge, steel brush and baking soda for the cleaning purpose.
Car Battery Charger:
Taking into consideration the battery type, dimension, capacity (Amph), max. charging current and voltage rating, you need to pick a battery charger. Make sure that the charging current is of the maximum capacity. This helps you choose the correct charger.
When you use a battery charger, the lower level of electrolyte is restored. Once that is done, your battery starts to function normally. The charge, stability and termination of the current are performed flawlessly using a suitable battery charger.
Drill Set:
You also need to have a drill set that helps in the refurbishing process. The drill set should have a 1500 mAh battery, 2-speed setting (up to 1500 RPM), torque settings and keyless chuck.
Battery Analyzer:
This is a tool that is useful for finding faults and fixing them in batteries. It helps gauge discharge and battery voltage. Battery analyzer helps you conduct ripple voltage testing. It has a user friendly interface with a USB port to transfer saved data into a PC.
Load Tester:
This piece of equipment helps you read the initial and final voltage in a battery. The current condition of the battery is easily ascertained via this handy devise.
The Hydrometer:
In order to assess the current charge level in each battery cell, you need a hydrometer. The electrolyte gravity in each cell can be determined accurately using this devise.
Battery Additive:
When the need of the hour is to improve battery performance then, you need an additive. This is a special concoction of chemicals that helps remove corrosion from the battery surface. The removal of lead sulphate is what an addictive does.
Bucket:
This is useful for preparing electrolyte solution that needs to be poured inside the battery cells. A bucket also comes in handy when you need to retrieve old lead-acid from within the battery.
Funnel:
To avoid spilling of liquid that is transferred to and from the battery, you need a funnel. Get hold of any funnel that can get the job done. You do not need any fancy designs for this job.
Gloves/ Apron and Goggles:
In order to safeguard yourself from possible acid leaks, you need protective gear. Cover your eye with a pair of goggles. You also need to cover your arms via a pair of gloves. Finally, an apron or an overall should save your clothes from any damage.
What is Battery Regeneration Process?
Battery regeneration is a process wherein you become capable of refurbishing a dying battery. The lead sulfate that is deposited on the battery surface is to be removed. This process is what helps refurbish the battery in its complete entirety.
The process of battery regeneration is rather slow. Nonetheless, at the end of the process, lead sulfate is converted into sulfuric acid. This acid is further fed into the battery cells. This helps maintain optimal electrolyte balance. The end result is optimal battery performance.
Here are some battery maintenance tips:
@ If you have a starter battery then, you need to charge them on a regular basis. Such batteries are super-efficient and are providing current (of high intensity) on a regular basis. So, if you do not recharge the battery when it is 80% full, its efficiency shall be diminished.
@ In case your battery is used only as an emergency backup then, you do not need to recharge it regularly.
@ If your battery type is slow discharge then, you can hope to retain its services till about 20% power is left. These recyclable batteries can be recharged up to 1500 times.
How to Start a Profitable Battery Reconditioning Business from Scratch?
Battery reconditioning business is a profitable venture these days. Not only does it allow you to make money, it also helps you save the environment by reducing the pollution levels.
In case you are purchasing a new battery then, you spend close to $100. On the other hand, you can recycle an old battery for $45. This helps you save money. Moreover, dying batteries can be recycled more than twice. So, you end up saving money.
When you make your customers understand this, your business can grow several folds over. Batteries of all types can be recycled – golf cart, car, hybrid, forklift, laptop, cellphone, solar panel etc. So, you have immense scope here.
The Action Plan for Battery Refurbishing Business:
Step # 1: You need to learn how to recondition old and dying batteries. For that you need to undergo training. You may opt for a online coaching service or register for a physical classroom session.
Step # 2: You now need to get hold of a place wherein you need to refurbish old batteries. Rent a small space or buy one. It all depends on your personal preference and budget.
Step # 3: You now need to register your business with the concerned government authorities. After the registration process has completed, you need to ensure that you get all the valid licenses required for practicing your business.
Step # 4: Get hold of the equipment that is considered necessary for executing your business. You may need to spend initially but with time, the expenses incurred shall reap profits.
Step # 5: A suitable business plan shall help you get far enough. You need to plan the strategy to set shop, advertise and offer after sales services to your customers.
Step # 6: The projected investment and the expected income should also be made clear. Only then shall you be able to reap the desired profits from your business.
Step # 7: Do include overheads. Some of these include employee salaries, rentals, utility bills and more.
Step # 8: While I always advise never to give up, you should know when to back away. In case you have tried hard enough and are losing money even after the projected testing phase, you should shut shop. It is wise to try another business rather than losing everything.
Do You Really Need a Battery Refurbishing Company to Recondition Your Old Battery?
Regardless of the battery type that you have, you do not need additional services in order to refurbish your battery. You can complete this task at home. All you need is some time at hand and the necessary equipment.
Why Should You Recondition Your Battery at Home?
You may already be aware that the development of sulphate crystals forces your battery to die a premature death. To prolong its existing lifespan, you need to perform a battery reconditioning job. You may either hire an expert or do it at home.
I personally prefer the diy battery reconditioning option as it is ‘cost effective’ and ‘easy to perform’.
Well, here are the steps for the same:
Gear Up for the Procedure:
In the very first step, you need to prepare for the diy home based battery regeneration process. Wear a pair of rubber gloves and a pair of goggles.
Slip an apron or a pair of old overalls to save your clothes from dirt. Also, look for an area that has ample ventilation. Do not choose a room that does not offer sunlight or wind pass-through.
Clean the Battery of Corrosion:
Prepare a cleansing paste that is to be applied on the terminals of the battery. Take 2 cups of baking soda and dissolve it in a cup of water. Apply the paste to the post and terminals.
Scrub with a toothbrush. The liquid shall start to emit bubbles. This is a clear sign that the corrosion is being eaten up by the solution. Once you are satisfied, rub the area with a piece of clean cotton cloth. Make sure that the battery is bone dry before proceeding with the next step.
The Voltage Check:
After the battery is completely dry, get a Voltmeter. This helps check the current voltage in your battery. A properly working battery shall deliver 12.6 volts of power.
If the voltmeter reads anywhere in between 10 volts to 12.6 volts then, the battery is fit to be reconditioned. If the reading is below the 10 volt mark, you need to throw it in a trash can.
Battery Removal & Cleansing:
You need to now remove the battery from the car. Place it in a ventilated room. Open the cell caps and empty the solution inside in an empty bucket.
In another bucket, prepare a solution of baking soda and distilled water. Pour the solution in each cell. Seal the caps. Shake the battery for two minutes. Thereafter, simply empty the solution into an old bucket.
Refill the Battery with Solution:
Take about 120 grams of Epsom salt. Mix this to 950ml of water. Make sure that the water is warm and distilled. This is a perfect electrolyte solution. You need not now fill each cell with this solution.
The Slow Charge:
You need to now connect the battery with a charger. Make sure that you keep the electrolyte solution away from the battery. In slow charge mode, allow the battery to recharge. Keep it in this mode for up to 38 hours.
The Testing Phase:
After the 38 hour duration is complete, remove the charger from the battery. Check the voltage current. If it is 12 volts, all is good. If the voltage is less than 10 volts then, re-charge the battery for another 10 to 12 hours.
Load Test the Battery:
Place the battery into your vehicle. Switch the ignition on. Allow the headlights to be turned on. Leave the vehicle running for about 15 minutes.
Switch off the engine and check the voltage of the battery using a Voltmeter. If the reading is 9.65 Volts, your battery is as good as a new one.
FYI: You should be able to repeat this reconditioning cycle for another 2 times. Thereafter, you should discard the battery.
My Opinion on DIY Battery Reconditioning at Home
I (LeanAndFit review staff) am of the opinion that you should learn how to recondition batteries at home. While I am writing this article with regards to battery refurbishing companies, my motive here is to encourage you to do this without any help.
The reason why you should opt for reconditioning old and dying batteries at home is to save the unnecessary cost. You shall spend nothing while doing so (I mean almost nothing). On the other hand, if you depend on a mechanics, you need to pay money.
While using the services of battery refurbishing companies shall be a cost effective option as compared to buying a new battery, it is still costly.
So, just get the basic equipment home. I have mentioned the same in the above sub categories. This is also a one-time purchase. Thereafter, simply follow the steps (also mentioned above) and refurbish your battery at home.
If things go well, you can even open a battery refurbishing business and make some real money.
